About the Artist: Claire Barclay (b. 1968, Paisley) studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1986 to 1993: receiving
a BA in Environmental Art and a Master of Fine Art. Barclay is known for her prints and large-scale sculptural installations which respond to the exhibition space they are contained within:
striking precarious balances between function
and dysfunction, chaos and order.
Barclay is a leading figure in a generation of graduates from the Glasgow School of Art in the 1990s, a group of young artists studying in the city who rose to the fore of the contemporary art world. She has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, including solo exhibitions at
The MAC, Belfast (2022); Tramway, Glasgow (2017); MUDAM, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (2010); Luxembourg (2009); Camden Art Centre, London (2008); at the Tate Britain, London (2004). In 2024, Barclay had a solo exhibition; Rawless at Cample Line, Thornhill, featuring a new site-specific installation. Barclay represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale (2003).
