About the Residency

We first saw Toby’s work in a studio on the top floor of a Euro Central office; his life sized cardboard motorbikes casually parked on immaculate blue carpet. All of this was sihouleted against the corporate carpark below, an ordered concrete world of suits and Skodas. We’ve been trying to catch up with his work ever since. For this residency Toby used found cardboard from the shopping centre to create a large physical body of work in the space. Taking centre stage was the large and sprawling F1 racing car, a crowd favourite.

About the ArtistToby is a Glasgow based visual artist working in Scotland since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 2000. A multidisciplinary artist, he is interested in the process of repurposing found material into objects of everyday life. His drawing practice fuels his large body of work and is generated from a rich observational practice of urban environments. Carparks, cityscapes and the underpass are all vital source material for Messenger’s drawing and sculptural output.
